Seattle Loves Los Angeles

Jen Graves of Seattle's alternative weekly The Stranger has written a bubbling, and earnest paean to Los Angeles art. She actually does a better job of writing about the more interesting art in Los Angeles than the LA Times, who it seemed for a moment were getting interesting with a few scattered articles about real artists (especially those by Sharon Mizota). But the last few gallery reviews have been tearfully boring and frightfully unaware.

The Stranger article makes the minimally boosterish part of me a bit thrilled, especially since Graves managed to capture some of what makes me proud about Los Angeles. Not any particular artist, institution, or gallery, but I feel like she captured the real gestalt. Graves' writing isn't as critically incisive as I might normally like but it's passionate and smart.

That said, I'm not sure why she bolds things so much in the article. See following excerpt for example.

"For anyone who loves art, it has, in the past few years alone, become easy to love L.A."
